Dexters

Our Cows

Dexters are a great choice for smaller farms, new livestock owners, people seeking low environmental impact, easy to handle, friendly cattle. They are used for meat and milk production. Their beef is tender and flavorful. Their milk is rich and creamy.

We maintain a breeding herd of 30-40 ADCA registered Dexter cows. They are all PHA and Chondro negative. They are health tested annually for BLV, BVD, Johnes, and Neospora. We have primarily polled cows, with a few dehorned ladies representing genetic lines that we felt would add to the herd. We have numerous A2/A2 cows in our herd. Some anecdotal evidence suggest that A2/A2 milk may be easier to digest for some people.

Our cows live on native pastures, calve and raise their calves on pasture. They are very friendly and love a good scratch.

We typically calve in the late Fall, but sometimes have stragglers hanging on that calve in the Spring. Dexters are excellent mothers, and have long productive lives. We strive to keep and produce dual purpose cows that are successful in a forage based system.

We typically have several heifers that we have retained to monitor their development. These girls are handled frequently to reinforce their naturally friendly natures. These younger ladies may become available as yearlings, or as bred heifers. We aim for heifers to calve between 30 and 36 months of age.

Please see our Available page for currently available cattle.

Our herd matriarch: Belle Fourche Ladybug DOB 6/8/2009

Cow

Ladybug or “Bug” as she is affectionately known is an example of what a Dexter cow should be. Bug still raises a calf every year with no issues. She is currently bred to Mrald Tuffy for a 2026 calf. Our bull WMSF Chip is her son. We have retained her daughter WMSF Patience as well.

Herd Sires

We do not breed outside cows for bio security reasons, and do not yet collect any of our guys. We typically have some of their offspring available.

Pippin

Belle Fourche Pippin

ADCA 034146 DOB 10/10/2013 Heterozygous polled A2/A1

Pippin is our foundation sire from the incredible Belle Fourche herd in Georgia. He is a son of Hillview Redwing. He has produced many nice calves for our herd, and continues to sire calves every year. He has an excellent temperament and conformation which he passes to his offspring. He is sound and maintains his condition on pasture even during breeding season. He is a great example of Dexter longevity.

Mr Hugh

Glenn Land Mr Hugh

ADCA 048153 DOB 4/26/2020 Homozygous polled A2/A1 E+/e

Hugh comes from the well known Glenn Land herd in California. He is typical of the Glenn Land cattle – square conformation and shorter in stature while still being chondro negative. He carries some Woodmagic genetics. He is easy going, and produces small birth weight calves. We use him on most of our first calf heifers. He is a very easy keeper, and easy to live with.

Bull named Chip

WMSF Chip

ADCA 051568 DOB 1/26/22 Homozygous polled A2/A2

Chip is our home bred son of Belle Fourche Pippin and Belle Fourche Ladybug. He exhibits all the positive qualities of his parents and produces correct, uniform calves with low birth weight. We retained him to keep these qualities in the herd after his parents retire.

Tuffy

Mrald Clarence aka Tuffy

ADCA 053126 DOB 11/9/22 Homozygous polled A2/A2 Black, carries red and dun

Tuffy is from the long established dual purpose Dexter herd at Emerald Park farm in Washington state. He is maturing nicely and we have just welcomed his first calves which look very promising. We do not breed outside cows for bio security reasons, and do not yet collect any of our guys. We typically have some of their offspring available.
